What Type of Alternator Is This On-Board Battery Charger Compatible With?

This battery charger is compatible with both traditional and smart alternators. However, since a standard/traditional alternator has a fixed voltage when charging, and a smart alternator has a controlled charging output based on operating conditions, it is required to connect the charger to the smart alternator through the Vehicle Ignition Port using the IGN Signal Wire provided in the package.

What Will Happen If the Service Battery Is Fully Charged?

This Renogy DC to DC MPPT on-board Battery Charger is equipped with a built-in Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR). When the service battery is fully charged, the charger will switch to Trickle Charge mode to maintain the service battery's fully charged status. Additionally, it will also Trickle Charge the starting battery via solar panels. The VSR ensures reliable isolation between the starting battery and service battery, preventing charging interference.

What Types of Batteries Does the Charger Support?

This charger supports Gel, AGM, Flooded, and Lithium batteries. Ensure that you correctly set the battery type once it is installed. For battery settings, please refer to the Manual Book on page 12 and 15.

How Do I Set the Battery Type Since There Is No Display Screen?

To change the battery type, press the push button located on the PV+ and ALT+ side of the DCDC. Continue pressing the button, and the LED will display different colors, with each color representing a specific battery type. For more details, please refer to the manual on page 15 for Battery Type LED.

Notes:

  • Do not reverse the polarity when connecting the battery, as reversed polarity can cause injury and damage to the device.

  • Ensure the battery poles are clean when connecting the terminals. Select a sufficient cross-section for the connection cable and tighten the nuts and bolts with the proper torque, as loose connections can lead to overheating.

  • Avoid over-torquing the terminals on the DCDC, as this can cause irreparable damage. Do not exceed 16 N-m / 3.3 ft-lb.

  • If the battery charger is connected to both the starting battery and solar panels simultaneously, the maximum input current will be 25A for each. If the battery charger only connects to one of the two DC inputs, the maximum input current will be 50A.

  • Use the following cable colors:

    • Red: Positive connection
    • Black: Negative connection
