What is the nano matrix filter made from?
The nano-matrix filter is made from spun glass which is pleated to create the matrix. This matrix is what captures harmful particles and removes them from your air. The nano matrix filter also contains activated carbon (from waste walnut shells!) which can remove odors and VOCs from the air.
Where does the moss come from in Briiv?
The moss filter in Briiv is sustainably sourced reindeer moss, which comes from Finland.
Where does reindeer moss grow?
Reindeer moss forms large mats over the ground in boreal and arctic regions around the circumpolar north. It grows on the surface of bare soil or gravel in harsh environments of coniferous forests. Reindeer moss cannot be cultivated in any form.
How is Reindeer moss collected? Is reindeer moss collected sustainably?
Our suppliers always collect our reindeer moss by hand, and all of their employees are trained to pick it. It is very important for us that reindeer moss areas are treated in a sustainable manner to make sure the reindeer moss fields continue growing in the forests. With their picking method, it can grow back as fast as possible. They never collect reindeer moss mechanically as this often causes it to stop growing in the areas it has been collected from.
Does it cause harm to reindeers when reindeer moss is collected?
No animals suffer from reindeer moss being collected. Reindeer eat reindeer moss as a part of their diet, but they live in different areas than where the supplier operates. Reindeer do not naturally reside in the areas where the moss is collected from.
Does the moss filter need to be watered, fed or washed?
The moss in Briiv is the easiest plant you'll ever have, as you don't need to do anything! Ensure you don't allow the moss to come into contact with water at all, because this will start the decomposition process of the moss. Before the reindeer moss is packed up and sent out, it is naturally treated to help it retain its vibrancy and springiness, but water will break this down and the moss will be unable to filter your air efficiently. There's also a risk of your unit getting wet if you water your moss, which could cause further issues! If your moss looks particularly dusty before it's time to replace it (we recommend replacing the moss every year, and you can buy replacement filters here) you can give it a refresh by carefully taking it from the glass and shaking the dust out. We'd recommend using a sieve or strainer to do this outside or over the bin. You can then pop the moss back and continue to let Briiv filter your air.
Is the moss safe for pets?
No harm will come to your pets from ingesting the moss, although it doesn’t taste very nice; don't ask us how we tested that! The filter is a lichen known as reindeer moss, which is commonly consumed by reindeer, hence the name. The moss is coated with a natural glycerol by the ethical farm from where we source our material, which again is completely harmless to your pet. We still wouldn't recommend you let your furry friend snack on the moss, but if they do, you don't need to be concerned for them.
Are the filters biodegradable?
Both the moss and coconut filters are suitable for your home compost and will break down fairly quickly. The nano matrix filter should be disposed of in your general waste, but the cardboard filter housing can go right into your recycling or compost at the end of Briiv's life.
